The Town Moderator presides over the Annual Town Meeting held on the first Monday in May, as well as any Special Town Meetings which are called. The Moderator also appoints all members to the Warrant Committee, Memorial Day Committee and the Minuteman School representative as well as some members to the Long Range Planning Committee and the Personnel Board.

There shall be a Moderator elected for a one-year term. The duties and authority of the Moderator shall be to chair Town Meetings and to make appointments to the Warrant Committee, the Memorial Day Committee, the Long Range Planning Committee, the Personnel Board and the Dover Representative to the Minuteman Regional Vocational School District School Committee. The Moderator’s duties and authority shall include, but shall not be limited to, those specified in M.G.L. ch. 39, §§ 15, 17, 18 and ch. 43A, § 8.

How do I get an item on the Town Meeting Warrant?
The Selectmen determine when the Warrant is open and articles will be accepted. Usually, it opens around the first of December and closes at the end of January for the May Annual Town Meeting. Call the Board of Selectmen’s Office for more information.

How do I get recognized to speak at Town Meeting?
The Moderator will recognize you when you raise your hand. It is always helpful to contact the Moderator before Town Meeting or attend the Moderator’s Meeting held the week before Town Meeting if you know that you want to be recognized during the discussion of a particular article.
